Breast Augmentation SurgeryIf you've been considering breast augmentation at Northpointe Cosmetic Surgery Center in Lapeer, Michigan, you're in good company. Well over 300,000 breast augmentations are performed each year, making it one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the country. Part of the process of breast augmentation includes education, so our Lapeer staff has compiled a few of the most common questions they hear from women who are considering this cosmetic procedure.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

Most healthy women who come to Northpointe Cosmetic Surgery Center for breast augmentation are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts. With reasonable expectations in mind, these women usually qualify for breast implant surgery. Those who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to wait; others who have active infections or existing cancers anywhere in the body are not typically considered candidates because of their potentially reduced healing capabilities. A woman must be over the age of 18 for saline implants and past age 22 for silicone gel implants. An evaluation with Dr. Douglas Hegyi at his Lapeer office will determine which type of implant will work best for you.

What is involved in the breast augmentation procedure?

General anesthesia is used during breast augmentation surgery. Your Lapeer plastic surgeon, Dr. Hegyi, will make a discreet incision behind the tissue of each breast that allows for placement of the implant. The implants are positioned to be symmetrical and natural-looking, and the incision is then closed using sutures. The entire procedure typically takes two hours and is done on an outpatient basis.

How long is the recovery process?

Immediately following your procedure, you will be monitored by our trained staff for a few hours. The post-operative recovery period is usually between 24 and 48 hours after completion of breast augmentation surgery, although your Lapeer plastic surgeon will likely recommend you take off work for at least seven days before returning. You will be given prescription anti-inflammatory medication to decrease any pain associated with the surgery. You should also rest propped up on pillows, wear loose-fitting clothing, and have a friend or family member help you wash your hair. To minimize swelling and support the breasts, you should wear an elastic bandage or a support bra consistently for the first week or two, including while sleeping.

A thorough consultation with Dr. Douglas Hegyi at Northpointe Cosmetic Surgery Center will help to answer any further questions you have about breast augmentation. Call our office for an appointment today!
